On Thursday May 23rd,  Mrs. Renee Gressler (Class of 2002), middle school science teacher, received the Green Apple Award. The award was presented by Sister Frances Theresa Matia on behalf of the Sisters of St. Joseph Justice, Peace, Integrity of Creation Team. Mrs. Gressler received a Green Apple Certificate, a “Be Kind” magnet, and an eco-friendly foam green apple.

Mrs. Gressler’s submission about the 8th grade trout release project was chosen as one of the top 6 initiatives.  The top 6 will be featured on the Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania Facebook page.

According to Mrs. Gressler’s submission, “8th grade students learn about the quality of water by doing a macroinvertebrate survey of a stream.  We release brook trout that we raised and we also collect “bugs” and these bugs’ presence or absence tells us about the water quality.  The students also pick a topic such as global warming, ozone depletion or air pollution and make a 5 minute I-movie teaching the class about their environmental issue.  When we watch the movies as ac lass, we ‘roll out the red carpet’ and have an Oscar viewing party complete with awards.”

We are Cardinal Proud of you Mrs. Gressler!
