Cross-Country Cardinals Make Premier Trip to Karns City

The Cardinal cross country squad took a long trip to Karns City, one of District nine’s oldest & more challenging courses, to kick off competition for the 2021 season. The meet was officially listed as a scrimmage, but the excitement and resulting learning curve for the runners was worth the journey.

A noted highlight of the evening races was Addison Smith’s (14:36) third place finish in the girl’s junior high competition. Smith’s time, her first ever in cross country, is second only to the 1980 run of Leah Guthrie(14:03). Guthrie later went on to be part of the legendary District Championship team of 1984, DCC’s only team title in history. Smith’s performance allowed her to place ahead of all AC Valley runners and a second place against both Keystone & Karns City. Her time now becomes the DCC Junior High girls record for the course.

Veteran runner Angelo Piccirillo (21:26) led the boys and established a  varsity mark for DCC on the course with a 7th place finish overall. Piccirillo was 2nd versus AC Valley; third against Keystone, and fourth versus Karns City.

Matt Volpe(23.11) took a third against both AC Valley & Keystone and a 12th overall finish at the small invitational.

Lady Card Katelyn Smith(34:20), placing 11th overall,  scored a 4th place versus both AC Valley & Karns City and a 5th against Keystone on the rolling hills of the course. Katelyn’s time establishes the DCC girl’s record for the course.

The Cardinals come back east on Tuesday to meet ECC on the storied Benzinger Park course in St. Marys.
