A beautiful sunny day in St. Mary’s legendary Benzinger Park was the sight of the 4-school gathering that tested the waters in an early cross country contest in District Nine. While powerhouse DuBois Area swept all schools there, the Cardinals added a few notes to the record books before heading home.

Addison Smith and Trent Labenne started the meet in high fashion in the junior high races with some record times and first places. Smith(11:45) and Labenne(10:36) now own the fastest times ever recorded in a junior high race for DCC. Smith’s time surpasses the 1980 mark set by Leah Guthrie(14:03) while LaBenne’s race will be marked ahead of Tony Cathcart’s 12:05 run in 1976.  Smith also picked up three first places as she lead the entire field of girls to win the quad-meet. LaBenne also picked up a first place against Punxsutawney, a fourth versus ECC, and a fifth against DuBois. Both runners now claim the DCC record for the Benzinger Park course.

In the varsity race it was Angelo Piccirillo(21:06) earning a career best on the course by 31 seconds over the 2020 season, and just missing Hall of Fame status by 2 seconds. Piccirillo’s run scored a 5th place against both Punxsy & ECC.

Matt Volpe(21:52) hit a career best run and established a personal record on the course.

In the girls contest Lady Card Katelyn Smith(36:00) also established a personal record at ECC’s course.

The Cardinals travel to West Middlesex on Saturday for their second ever appearance at the Big Red Invitational. The official’s gun goes off at 8:45am.
