Nearly 20 schools met on a moist, cool day to run the soggy-muddy trails of the famed Ridgway course at the District Nine Single ‘A’ Championships on a Saturday morning.

After a mass and blessing of the runners at St. Leo’s Church in Ridgway, the Cardinal cross country program pitched their tent to join the array of competitors as far away as Northern Potter & Cranberry.

Leading the Lady Cards was Katelyn Smith(29:44) with a career-best run that

broke the coveted 30-minute mark, achieving a season goal that once seemed unreachable just a few months ago. Smith’s outstanding run puts her on the official all-time listing of the Top 60 female runners at DCC since 1978, and engraves her name at #43 in all-time post-season placement at this meet.

Angelo Piccirillo(20:36) knocked off close to 20 seconds from his previous best time at this course to earn him a respectable place (46th) in the championship.

Both Eva Bloom(30:21) & Haley Semancik(34:16), representing the girls team, established their first personal marks here that will be targeted next season.

Winning the boys race was Kevin Sherry of Coudersport, and the girls race went to Jenna Gregory of Smethport.

Cranberry took both girls & boys team titles. Across town powerhouse DuBois Area took the boys team title in ‘AA’ competition, while the Lady Beavers  managed to qualify 3 girls to the state championships at the ‘AAA’ meet.

The Cardinals will hold their awards ceremony at DCC next week.
